Meet Kourtney Poznanczyk, location manager & funeral director of Nelsen Funeral Home – Ashland Chapel

A graduate of John Tyler Community College’s funeral service program, Kourtney brings five years’ experience in the industry to the Richmond area.

WHAT DREW YOU TO FUNERAL SERVICE?

After a strange series of events I was led to the funeral service industry. I never had to make a decision to become a funeral director – I immediately knew it was right when I learned that it was an option for a career path. There was no way of stopping me. I was drawn to the opportunity to be kind to others professionally. No two days are ever the same, actually no two hours of my work day are ever the same. I couldn’t imagine doing any other work.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FUNERAL HOME

Nelsen Funeral Home was established in 1892 and has been proudly serving families of Central Virginia since. We have three locations in Richmond, Williamsburg, and Ashland that we currently operate. Our location in Ashland was acquired from the Reid family in 2005.  I have the honor of operating the Reid Chapel of Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory. We are a full service funeral home offering a variety of services to those we have the opportunity to serve.

WHAT SETS YOUR HOME APART?

At Nelsen Funeral Home we specialize in creating unique and meaningful services that are tailored to each individual. We believe that no two lives are the same and work closely with surviving family members to capture the true essence of a loved one. Whether it be providing a personalized memento, food and beverage, music, or flowers- it is our goal to ensure the legacy of a loved one is honored and shared.

HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR COMMUNITY?

The town of Ashland is so beautiful and it is such an honor to be located here. We love to attend and sponsor the various community events in Ashland; Train Day, Strawberry Faire, Holiday Parade, etc.  We definitely enjoy being present and visiting with our neighbors. We also host an annual Candlelight Service of Remembrance around the holidays and invite those who have experienced a loss to light a candle in honor of those who have passed and to receive a message of hope.  The community is so lovely and it is such a “small town” feel here, especially with our local staff serving local families.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

For me, it is all about my family. I have a young daughter and another on the way. My husband and I enjoy building memories as a family in any way that we can. Working in the funeral home has really opened my eyes to what is truly important in life – the relationships we cultivate with others. We host many parties at our home for our extended families, friends, and neighbors. We keep very busy!
